Learning Objectives

  • In this lesson the students will learn:
  • How to gather and prepare a photographic data for a dataset.
  • The concept of pattern recognition.
  • Use pattern recognition concepts to identify different ocelots.
  • The use of big AI and big data supporting wildlife tracking and conservation efforts.

Guiding Ideas


Tell the students: they are stationed in the middle of a savannah, in a research outpost. This research output has been setup as a part of a biodiversity study. Where the goal is to track and monitor the population and movements of ocelots. The study is utilizing the power of AI to recognize the different ocelots and keep track of them in real time. In this lesson we will be utilizing semi-supervised machine learning to recognize the different patterns on the ocelot’s coats, as each ocelot has its’ own unique pattern. Similar to a fingerprint.

A partner called Wild Me is using AI to keep track of endangered animals for conservation purposes. They have different Wildbooks for different animals, where people can report animal sightings using pictures. Some of the Wildbooks are listed below:

Ask the students about the concepts that they have learned during the lesson.

1. What other animals could the AI developed in the lesson be used with?

Answer: The AI could be configured to work with any animal that has its own distinct markings. A zebra for example.


2. How does tracking a specific animal species help in its’ conservation efforts?

Answer: By tracking a specific animal species we can study its’ behaviours such as, movement, migration, and population. Which ultimately leads to more effective understanding of the animal’s habits conservation, assisting conservation efforts.
